Translate a PDF into Hindi, Spanish, French, Chinese, Arabic or 40+ other languages and get a Word document with the headings, lists, tables and page breaks kept. The text is read in your browser, and only that text is sent, encrypted, to our AI model.

## How do I translate a PDF document for free?

Add the PDF to Mergevanta's Translate PDF tool, pick the language to translate into and press Translate PDF. The text is extracted in your browser, translated by our AI model and returned as a Word document that keeps the headings, lists and tables. AI translations can contain mistakes, so check important passages.

## Key facts

- **Price:** Free
- **Watermark:** None
- **Sign-up:** Not required
- **Accepts:** .pdf
- **You get:** A translated .docx, a side-by-side .docx or a .txt
- **Processing:** Text is extracted in your browser; only the text is sent, encrypted, to our server's AI model — the file itself is never uploaded or stored
- **Files stored:** Never
- **Works on:** Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Android

## Why use Mergevanta

- **Structure kept:** Headings, bulleted and numbered lists, tables and page breaks come through, so the Word document reads like the original.
- **43 languages:** Indian languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and Marathi, plus Chinese, Arabic, Spanish and more — right-to-left scripts included.
- **Side by side option:** Choose a two-column Word document with the original next to the translation, or plain text for pasting anywhere.
- **Only the text leaves:** Your browser reads the PDF; just its text travels, encrypted, to our AI model, and nothing is stored once the translation is sent back.

## How to use it

1. Click Choose PDF and pick the file — its text is read in your browser.
2. Under Translate into, pick a language; search by its English or its own name.
3. Leave Translate from on Detect automatically, or pick the source language, and choose Pages if you only need part of the PDF.
4. Pick Download as — Word document (.docx), Side by side (.docx) or Text (.txt) — and press Translate PDF.
5. Download the result, or use Also download as for another format.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does the translation keep my PDF's layout?

It keeps the text and its structure — headings, lists, tables and a new page for each page of the PDF — but not the exact layout, fonts or images. That makes the Word document easy to edit, and it works for every language.

### Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

The file never leaves your device. Your browser extracts the text, and only that text is sent, encrypted end to end, to our server's AI model in small batches. Nothing is stored or kept in logs.

### How good are the translations?

Our AI model translates whole passages with their context, so the result reads naturally, but AI can still make mistakes. For contracts, medical or legal text, have important passages checked by a fluent reader.

### Which languages are supported?

43 languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Urdu, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Russian and Turkish. The source language is detected automatically.

### Is there a length limit?

Up to about 300,000 characters — roughly a hundred pages — are translated at a time. For a longer PDF, choose Pages and translate it in parts.

### Why does it say my PDF has no text?

Scanned PDFs are pictures of text. Run the file through [OCR PDF](https://www.mergevanta.com/ocr-pdf) first to add a text layer, then translate the new file.

### Can I translate a password-protected PDF?

Yes. Enter the password when asked; it is only used in your browser tab to open the file and is never sent.
